About Kaskattama Goose Lodge
The goose hunting season at Kaska Goose Lodge is quite short - running from the first week of September until approximately September 24th. Our season is comprised of a maximum of ten 4-day trips of eight hunters per trip. The trips are staggered with changeover days 1 day apart. Kaska Goose Lodge is located near the tip of a pie-shaped island in the Kaskattama River delta. Our 4,000 foot runway is a short distance from the lodge. A series of driftwood blinds have been strategically established along the east and west shores of the island as well as inland along beach ridges under the cover of willows and stands of pine. A Bell Long Ranger turbine helicopter is based at Kaska during the hunting season. The helicopter provides our hunters with increased mobility and gives them the ability to move to where the geese are staging on calm, bluebird days when the geese are reluctant to fly. The main species of geese hunters will find at Kaska are greater and lesser snow geese, Ross geese, greater and lesser Canada geese and Richardson geese. Good numbers of blue geese are found among the flocks of snows. In addition to the geese, the Kaskattama River delta is home to a number of species of ducks including teal, pintail, mallards, northern shoveller, scaup and black ducks. Ducks can be found flying along the river courses and congregating in a series of fresh water ponds located to the west of camp inland from Hudson Bay. Willow ptarmingan can also be abundant in the Kaska area. During September, as fall gives way to the approaching winter, the ptarmigan begin to change from their summer brown plumage to their white colouration of winter. The Hudson Bay Lowlands around Kaskattama are home to a dozens of polar bears during the summer and fall. As the ice melts off Hudson Bay the bears come ashore and spend most of their time resting. Kaska's hunters are offered excellent viewing and photo opportunities when taking the helicopter to hunt east or west of Kaska.Reviews
